The Bachelor of Health Sciences – Medical Imaging program is a highly specialized area of diagnostic imaging and is an essential part of the healthcare profession. This program has been developed to provide students with a diversified plan of study in one of two tracks, Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). CT and MRI are both unique in how they produce diagnostic images. CT technologists specialize in using ionizing radiation while MRI technologists utilize strong magnetic fields and radio frequencies. Both of these imaging modalities produce cross-sectional images for physicians to assist them in the diagnoses and treatment of patients.

Imaging technologists must demonstrate proper patient care and ethical behaviors and strive to become autonomous learners. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: preparation, quality control testing, patient interviews, performing imaging procedures, administering a contrast medium and assisting physicians by providing quality diagnostic images. This program provides students the opportunity for additional career opportunities and advancement within the imaging profession.

MI Admission Requirements

MI program begins once each year in the fall term. Applicants can choose to apply for the CT or MRI track.

Applicants must have earned 25 college credits, including 6 credits of the required science and/or college algebra coursework, prior to admission review.

  • The BHS-Medical Imaging Degree in CT requires an ARRT Registered Technologist in Radiography, Nuclear Medicine Technology (registration through NMTCB is also accepted) or Radiation Therapy.
  • The BHS-Medical Imaging Degree in MRI gives preference to ARRT Registered Technologist applicants. Students with a background in other health occupations including a patient care focus may be considered.

MI Application Materials

Required application materials can be submitted as they are completed, but all materials must be received before admission consideration.

Complete applicant files are reviewed on a rolling basis. Admission decisions take 3 to 4 weeks after the application is complete. 

MI General Education Prerequisites

General education prerequisite courses are taken at another regionally accredited institution and transferred to Allen College.

Applications can be submitted before all general education requirements are complete, but if granted admission, coursework must be completed before starting the program in August.

 

MI Curriculum Options

The Medical Imaging curriculum is delivered online with in person clinical placements.

The MI program has two track options: Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).  Both tracks have full-time, part-time and certificate options available.

All clinical externship courses will be developed based on the student's plan of study. All general education courses can be completed at any regionally accredited institution of the student's choice. A minimum of 124 credit hours is required for the BHS-Medical Imaging degree; 33 of those credit hours must be completed at Allen College. A certificate option is available to those who do not wish to pursue the baccalaureate degree. All program courses must be taken in sequence as they are only offered once during the program.

Program Mission Statement

The mission of the BHS-Medical Imaging program is to provide a baccalaureate-level educational program that prepares graduates for careers and advancement opportunities in the medical imaging profession.

Program Goals

The students in the BHS-Medical Imaging program will be able to:

  • Communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrate technical competency in obtaining quality images.
  • Use critical thinking skills.
  • Display a commitment to professional development.

 

 

Externships

Students are scheduled in clinical rotations to develop the necessary skills for a career in Medical Imaging. The externship courses provide students with hands-on experience while gaining additional knowledge and instruction from professional technologists.
 
The clinical sites established for the program are located across the state of Iowa. Clinical site travel is required for MRI externship courses MI460 and MI480 and for CT externship courses MI445 and MI465. If available, students will be assigned to a clinical site closest to their home of residence. Students are responsible for their own transportation to the clinical sites. (Degree seeking students who elect to take PH460 and PH476 in place of the externship courses will not be scheduled in clinical rotations)
 
Students can choose to find their own clinical site location. In this case, it is the student's responsibility to get approval from their desired clinical site.
 
Clinical assignments are constructed to assure students receive equitable exposure to clinical areas. A clinical rotation schedule will be given to each student during the first week of October (prior to their spring Externship Course). The information on the schedule will allow the students to be informed of where they will be scheduled for the duration of the program.
